Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)

An IVP is an exam that provides the radiologist with pictures of the urinary tract. The urinary tract consists of the kidneys, bladder, ureters, and the urethra. An IVP can evaluate the collecting system inside the kidneys.

Typically an IVP is performed when any of the following conditions exist:

  • Blood in the urine.
  • Evaluate back and flank pain.
  • Determine the size and location of a tumor in the urinary tract.
  • Detect the presence and size of kidney stones.
  • Determine the cause of recurring urinary tract infections.
